Five Tips for Working from home

Working remotely may be unfamiliar to many people, and there are numerous helpful tips from professionals all over the world posted about. If you haven’t already, connect with your coworkers to stay up to date, share ideas and advice, or simply check in. Staying connected is more important than ever as we navigate changes in our daily routines, as it serves as a reminder that we are not alone.

While everyone’s situation will be unique, here are a few pointers to help you navigate this new remote working environment.

1. Establish a new standard

To stay productive, stick to your normal work routine. If you normally shower in the morning or listen to a podcast on your commute, you should continue to do so. It sets the tone for the day (whatever that may be). It’s also critical to maintain flexibility while also setting boundaries for your working hours. It’s all too easy for me to lose track of time while working, and before I know it, it’s 9 p.m.! Set expectations with your manager for when you will be available online and whether you will need to be available outside of your 9-5.

2. Create a work zone

If you don’t already have one, try to make one, even if it’s just in a corner of your bedroom. Almost one-third of professionals report working from their couch or bed at home, which is not only bad for your back but also blurs the line between work and home. If you have a spouse or roommate who also works from home, try to keep separate working spaces so you don’t distract each other. If you have a particularly important conference call, assign your children a special project in another room to keep them occupied while you take the call.

3. Maintain contact with your team

If you aren’t used to working remotely on a regular basis, you may begin to feel isolated from your coworkers and even lonely. Video conferencing can assist in bridging the gap. According to a recent survey*, more than half of professionals are now transferring in-person meetings to phone or video as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak, and this is likely to increase further with recent developments such as school closures. If you’re facilitating a virtual meeting, be aware of all participants and give them a chance to speak up so they feel included. If you’re the one dialling, make an announcement to let everyone know you’re on the line.

Keep in mind that it does not always have to be about work. Before each video conference, consider hosting a fun icebreaker or playing your favourite song. Anyone for a virtual coffee date?

4. Make your health a priority.

Investing in your health and wellness is essential for happiness and is a sure way to avoid “cabin fever.” Schedule time to stretch in between meetings. Instead of soda and chips, opt for water and fresh fruit. Take a 30-minute break to recharge your batteries. Be gentle with yourself as you adjust to your new surroundings.

5. Make use of harmony

When so much communication takes place electronically, it’s easy to misinterpret sentiment. So, be mindful of your tone when communicating via channels such as email and instant messaging, and ask lots of questions to gain a better understanding. Finally, monitor your energy levels. When it’s time to sleep, leave your phone and laptop outside your bedroom door so you can catch some zzz’s and recharge for the next day.
