What to Do After Submitting a Job Application

What to Do After Submitting a Job Application

You’ve spent a significant amount of time researching job openings, identifying companies, perfecting your resume, and honing your interview skills.

You’re finally ready to take the first big step. You’ve discovered a perfect position that has just become available at your dream company. You meticulously fill out the online application, attach your cover letter and resume, and submit everything!

So, what now?

You should follow up proactively while keeping in mind that dozens — if not hundreds — of other resumes are also flooding the same HR department, making it difficult to respond to each applicant individually.

This does not diminish the importance of sending a polite and succinct follow-up. In fact, following up (the right way) may be all that is required to set your application apart from the crowd.

Consider the following steps to take after submitting your online application.

Step 1: How to Follow Up

Make a note of the contact email address, as well as the date you submitted your application.

Plan a brief courteous email check-in one week after submitting your application to confirm they received it. Take advantage of this opportunity to reaffirm your enthusiasm for the role.

If you haven’t heard back after a week, send another short, one- to two-paragraph note expressing genuine interest in the position and inquiring about next steps.

You can also use this second follow-up to reinforce how you see yourself using your skills to solve a potential challenge that you suspect – or even know – the company is facing. Keep this “solution” as brief as possible (1-3 sentences). The power of this “future impact” proposal is in establishing a link between your value proposition and their pain points.

Step 2: How to Follow Up

If you do not receive a contact email during the application process, you will need to be a little more creative.

Search the company website for contact information related to the role or division for which you applied. If you find a name but no way to contact them, make a note of it.

Next, look up that person’s and company’s names online, and when you find them, look for an email address. Using the email address, follow-up in the same way (but not exactly the same way) as mentioned above – brief, polite, and enthusiastic notes indicating you have applied for a position in this person’s company.

Inform them that after further investigation, you discovered this person may be a person of influence, and that he or she is possibly the one vetting resumes for the open position. As a result, you wanted to reach out with a quick status check while also expressing your interest. Make sure you’re not implying an expected response and that your intentions are simply to express your continued interest in the role.

If you have a name but can’t find an email, you could try calling the company’s reception desk. Indicate who you’re attempting to contact and simply ask for the best way to email them. More information can be found by searching Facebook or other social media sites.

Applying for jobs at smaller or mid-sized businesses may provide a more direct path to follow up, as key leadership/ownership are frequently listed on the site, along with contact information.

Keep your tone upbeat and professionally passionate when emailing or calling, indicating that you would like to explore working for this company. Be specific to demonstrate the credibility of your feelings. And be ready to leave the conversation and move on to the next potential opportunity without leaving a trail of angst or pressure in your wake. Maintaining a positive attitude will not only help your job search portal but will also allow you to move more confidently throughout the process.
